Pang’Ono Pang’Ono, meaning little by little in Chichewa, reflects the quiet endurance of women in Malawi and the weight they carry in the simple, essential act of seeking clean water. The phrase, spoken often as a reminder of patience and time, becomes here a metaphor for the rhythm of this story: steady, unhurried and profoundly human.

Offered this season as part of a quiet gesture from my studio, this book invites a moment of reflection on the unseen contributions of women and the global inequities held within something as basic as water.

About the Book

Pang’Ono Pang’Ono, meaning little by little in Chichewa, is a quiet meditation on women’s daily journeys to access clean water in Malawi. Photographed over ten days, the work follows the emotional and physical weight carried by those who shoulder this essential task. Through gentle, attentive images, the book reflects both the endurance and vulnerability embedded in a responsibility that shapes the rhythm of everyday life.

The Story Behind the Series

Created while working on commission with WaterAid UK, the series approaches the water crisis through intimacy rather than urgency. Malawi is a land abundant in water, yet one in three people live without safe, reliable access to it. This burden falls predominantly on women. Pang’Ono Pang’Ono listens to their stories with patience, allowing the photographs to unfold slowly, like the phrase itself, revealing the resilience, dignity and quiet strength that define this journey.
