Guidance, Insight & Support for Documentary Photographers

Your Work. Your Voice. Your Path.

Whether you are shaping a longform project, preparing a photobook or exploring personal documentary work, mentorship is a space to refine your vision, strengthen your practice and deepen your confidence as a storyteller.

I offer guidance that is tailored, rigorous and generous, whether through a focused one-off session or a structured, extended programme over several months. Mentoring is a passion of mine: the joy of witnessing your work take form, of discovering new angles, new voices and new truths, is as enriching for me as it is for you.

I take on a limited number of mentees each year to ensure a focused, high-touch experience, so early applications are encouraged.

This is a single, focused online session lasting one hour, designed to provide expert feedback on your work in progress. Whether you need help refining a project idea, editing a body of work, or seeking professional guidance on a book maquette before publishing, this session is tailored to your needs.

Past participants have found this format invaluable for overcoming creative blocks, sharpening their editing process, or gaining clarity on next steps.

Ideal if you want focused guidance on a specific project or challenge, with practical, actionable insight you can implement immediately.

It's Personal - One Day Intensive

Visual Laboratory for

Stories Born of Experience.

In the summer of 2018, I began It’s Personal, a workshop series inspired by my own photographic practice. My vision is to create an intimate space to explore “the personal” and what that means in the context of photography.

Personal can take many forms. In this visual laboratory, I’ll guide you in uncovering what it means for you. Expect to get lost - and unlost. That’s one of the most exhilarating parts of the process.

We spend long hours immersed in editing, both in group discussions and one-on-one sessions. We also explore current issues in photography and publishing. I share my own tools and experience with you. Your work will move forward after this experience.

This is an intensive one-day visual laboratory for no more than 6 participants.

I curate these sessions across various venues and locations around the world - and will gladly host one where you are.

If you’re interested in joining, please get in touch.

In Their Words.

  • "I met Laura when she was a visiting lecturer on my MA course. I was immediately impressed by her work, her sensitivity to her subject matter and her ability to translate the ephemeral and intangible into compelling visual imagery. Laura subsequently helped me explore and add words to an archival project I’d started working on. I’d become a bit stuck with it, but her capacity to swiftly grasp the essence of the series and her empathy — with me as a human being and my work in its own right — were invaluable to my process of evolving the project, as were her observations on elements of the images I hadn’t noticed myself."

Julia Neal, participant in one-to-one online mentorship | seeking advice for her long-term project.

  • "If you are looking for a teacher, or a mentor, for photography, I can very highly recommend Laura. I have worked with her for nearly two years and she has been a guiding force for me in putting together my first book. She does this with a deft touch. She knows photography and gives feedback that is both sensitive and direct. She is also incredibly perceptive, both visually and for what lies behind the photograph. As a mentor, she leads from behind and helps you uncover your voice and your story. She is also a tasteful editor. If you can work with her, you will surely become more masterful in these arts."

Bob Farese, Jr., mentee focusing on his book publication.

  • “I was lucky enough to take part in one of Laura’s workshops in late 2018, and found it to be a useful, inspiring and genuinely collaborative experience which helped me organise, value and reconsider my own book project with a fresh pair of eyes. Laura is patient, constructive, considerate and critical in just the right way, fostering confidence, not despair!”

Sam Anthony, participant On Making Books.
