What to Expect
Two days of looking, listening, photographing and editing together, using Brighton and LULL as a live photographic laboratory.
LULL LIVE LAB is an intensive two-day workshop exploring how observation and experience can develop into a photographic language.
Set within LULL, my exhibition at Duke’s Lane, we will think about ways of looking beyond the immediately visible, paying attention to sound, movement, atmosphere, repetition, instinct and place.
On the first day, we will work through a series of looking and listening exercises before heading out into Brighton to photograph. Rather than working towards a prescribed assignment, you will be encouraged to follow your own observations and respond to what you encounter.
On the second day, we will bring that work back into the space and edit together. Through individual and group editing, sequencing and discussion, we will look for connections within the photographs and begin identifying the visual language emerging from them.
The aim isn't to produce a finished body of work in two days. It is to experiment, take risks and understand more deeply how we move from looking, making and editing into finding a language of our own.
DAY 1
LOOK • LISTEN • MAKE From attention to image
Saturday 10 October · 10am-6pm
We begin inside LULL with conversation, looking and listening exercises before heading out into Brighton for an extended period of photographing.
You will work from a series of open prompts designed to encourage observation, experimentation and instinct rather than illustration.
We return to the exhibition towards the end of the day for an initial look at what has emerged.
DAY TWO
EDIT • SEQUENCE • RESPOND From image to language
Sunday 11 October · 11am–4.30pm
We return to the photographs made on Saturday and begin the process of editing together.
Through individual and collective edits, sequencing and conversation, we will explore what the photographs are beginning to say, what can be removed, where connections are forming and how a group of individual images can begin to develop into a visual language.
We finish with a small sequence from each participant and a conversation about where the work might go next.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Photographers at any stage who want to slow down, experiment and think more deeply about how they make and edit photographs.
You don't need an existing project or a finished portfolio.
Bring a camera you're comfortable working with. Digital cameras and phones are both welcome.
