A Star in the Sea (coming 01/2019)
In December 2015 I travelled to my city of birth for the first time. With a Polaroid sx70, some film and an unsettling emotional cocktail of anxiety and curiosity, I walked around the streets of Ronkswood, Worcestershire, UK. It's not as much physical labor as it may sound given the town is minuscule compared to Cairo where I grew up. Polaroid was the natural tool of choice since my family album was the only visual reference of my birth place so far. I wanted to bring life to my history without changing the way it looks in my head. The resulting visual obscurity initially manifested in the form of frustration - thinking an image was captured only to discover it wasn't. My pictures - meditations on elements of nature that struck me as the sole survivors from three decades earlier when my parents walked the same paths I now explored, were transformed into dreamy mountain peaks, frozen icebergs and satellite images of a landscape I can only imagine in my dreams.
